Angels Show Strong at VMI Relays

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Meredith College track & field Angels closed out the indoor season at the Virginia Military Institute Winter Relays weekend event Friday and Saturday in Lexington.

The Avenging Angels started day one of the meet with a strong second place finish in the 4x800 meter relay with members: Julie Tonon, Emma Travis, Francie Overman, and Corrine Weaver crossing the line in a team total time of 10:57.21.

In the second event of the day, the 60 meter dash, teammates Essence Thomas and Sara-Hale Watson completed the event in season personal records 8.22 and 9.78 seconds, respectively. Thomas' time was good enough to qualify her for the semifinal round where she finished 22nd overall (8.24).

The mid-distance Avenging Angels were next on the track to compete in the 500 meter run. Erin Outlaw led the team with a fourth-place overall finish in the event, setting a new school record of 1:25.89 in the process. She was followed closely by Ansley Bucknam in a season best 1:29.30, good for eighth-place overall.

Capping off a strong day, Weaver improved on her school record in the 1000 meter run to win the overall event, stopping the clock at 3:13.36. Teammates Michelle Gladdis and Kaelin Sanderford finished in 3:33.62 (fifth) and 3:39.99 (seventh), respectively.

In day two of the VMI Winter Relays, Weaver and Gladdis toed the line for the Angels in the mile run. Weaver continued her strong freshman campaign with a blistering new season-best and school record (5:27.49) good enough for 10th overall. Gladdis finished with a time of 6:02.90 (28th), also a season best.

Outlaw and Bucknam competed in the 400 meter run. Outlaw bested her season performance in 1:04.96 (26th) and Bucknam in at 1:10.11 (36th). Thomas finished off her indoor career with a personal indoor best in the 200 meter run, stopping the clock at 26.61 seconds. Finishing out the day for the Angels, Tonon took 18th-place in the 3000 meter run, covering the distance in 11:36.12.

The Avenging Angels now transition their focus to the outdoor season with the Braves Track Classic up first. The event is slated for a Noon start Friday, March 6, at UNC-Pembroke.
