RALEIGH, N.C. -- The visiting Washington & Lee Generals handed Meredith College soccer a 5-0 loss in Saturday's non-conference action at home. The Avenging Angels defense held WLU to no score throughout the second half.
WLU, who received votes in the latest top-25 United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III poll, made quick work of their five goals throughout the first 45 minutes of play. The first point by Laney Smith seconds into the 19th minute of play out the Generals on the board. Seconds later Sophia Roche' netted a pass from Kristen Castle to give Washington & Lee a two-goal lead.
Grace Wielechowski, who aided Smith in the game winner, scored her own shot unassisted in the 25th minute of play, and Castle found the net 85 seconds later. Kelsey Anderson scored the final point on the day off a pass from teammate Madeleine Becker to secure the win for the Generals in the first half.
The young Meredith squad, still adjusting a coaching change last spring, held the visitors throughout the second stanza. Defensive efforts from Kaelin Sanderford, Katie Quinn, and Annah Bishop supported goalie Miranda Lutz, who tallied five saves in each half.
Hunter Straub reached the hands of WLU goalie Grace Coombs earlier in the first half, and Morgan Thomas made an attempt midway through the second frame. Amelie Gillies battled for possession down the sideline late in the match but would not clear the Generals defense.
