Panthers Shut Out Soccer, 3-0

Miranda Lutz in goal

FERRUM, Va. -- The Meredith College soccer Angels dropped a 3-0 loss to former USA South foe Ferrum College Wednesday in a evening road contest.

Led by goalie Miranda Lutz, the Avenging Angels held off the host until the 38th minute of the match. Lutz stopped four first half attempts, leaving the Panthers with a 1-0 halftime lead thanks to a goal by Frances Best, assisted by Casey Raggett.

Hannah Elvington and Morgan Tingen launched a pair of attempts early in the match, but both were blocked by the Ferrum defense.

Lillian Fox drilled a shot seven minutes into the second period, but Taylor Dodson interrupted the effort with a save for the Panthers. Annah Bishop's attempt one minute later flew wide, and Ferrum's Ysabella Bettilyon found the net in the 59th minute to give the Panthers a two-point lead.

Katie Quinn launched a shot in the 79th minute, but Dodson saved the attempt to maintain her shut out. Lutz stopped a Panther attempt during the next play, but Best found Melina Turner for Ferrum's third goal in the 83rd minute to close out the scoring on the night. Hunter Straub launched back-to-back corner kicks in the final minutes of regulation, but the Angels were unable to score.

Lutz finished with five saves in her sixth loss of the season, and Dodson captured her fourth win on the year.

Next up, the Avenging Angels host the Washington & Lee Generals Saturday in a 1 p.m. pairing.
