Perko's 28 Points Not Enough in Loss to Falcons

Kate Perko on the move

MISENHEIMER, N.C. -- The Meredith College Avenging Angels posted their second-best performance from the field on the season, and Kate Perko scored a career-high 28 points. But the host Pfieffer Falcons still managed to capture a 72-64 victory in USA South action.

Pfieffer forced 17-of-23 MCBB turnovers and recorded a bonus 23 points to help secure tonight's conference win.

The Avenging Angels trailed PU by six at the end of the first quarter but trimmed that deficit to two at the intermission. Pfeiffer extended their lead to 10 in the third stanza, but the Angels battled back in the final frame. Daia Dawkins drained a three-pointer in the opening seconds, and Lindsay Bell added a second to cut the gap to five with 8:09 on the clock. Perko made a pair of layups, and Zaina Hook dropped in a free throw to pull Meredith to within one at 5:51.

But PU's Makalla Burnette recovered her own miss and scored the putback to keep Meredith at a distance. Another layup from Brina Bentley widened the gap, but Perko found Madison Gladwell inside for two to keep MCBB in the game with less than five remaining in regulation.

With just over a minute to go, Meredith cut the lead to a one possession game, but leading scorer A'Mya McClain landed a three-pointer with 52 seconds remaining in regulation to secure the victory for the Falcons.

Gladwell joined Perko in double figures with 10 points, but Pfieffer held Kimberly Schuh to single digits for the first time since mid-December to help finish the win. Bell hit a trio of threes, and Hook and Schuh recorded seven apiece with a game-high nine boards for Schuh.

The Avenging Angels host their final regular season pairing Saturday, Feb. 15, playing host to the Methodist Monarchs on Senior Day. Arrive early to celebrate the four-year career of Madison Gladwell prior to tipoff.
