RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Meredith College basketball Angels were unable to put away the visiting Bishops of N.C. Wesleyan in Saturday's 73-72 overtime loss. Three MCBB players finished in double-digits with Kate Perko leading the way with 27 points, adding 17 rebounds.
Down by nine midway through the fourth period, Meredith made three consecutive baskets inside the paint to battle back to within three at the three-minute mark. Leading scorer Kayla Johnson netted her second three-pointer on the next play, but Madison Gladwell found Kate Perko inside again for two. Daia Dawkins dropped an inbounds pass over the defense to Kimberly Schuh for two more, and a pair of Perko buckets put the Angels back in front 60-58 with 38 ticks left in regulation.
Johnson was fouled on a three-point attempt with 11 seconds remaining but missed one free throw to leave the game tied. The Bishops defense held Meredith in the final seconds to force the extra period.
The Avenging Angels earned the opening jump ball but threw it away for an easy two-pointer for N.C. Wesleyan to start overtime. Gladwell evened the mark with a drive to the basket and scored again on a putback with 3:21 remaining on the clock. Johnson finished an and-one play to put the Bishops back in front, and Daia Dawkins knocked down a pair from the stripe to shift the lead back to MCBB.
A pair of missed opportunities for Meredith allowed Johnson to put her team back up by one with 74 seconds left in the game, but Perko was fouled with 30 seconds left and dropped in both free throws for a 68-67 Meredith advantage. The Battling Bishops full court defense continued to challenge the Avenging Angels leaving Meredith down by four in the final seconds of play. Gladwell drained a long three-pointer, leaving the Angels trailing by one at the buzzer.
