WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Meredith College Angels collected a 71-46 victory over Salem in Saturday's USA South Conference pairing. Kate Perko led the Avenging Angels with a game-high 20 points and 13 rebounds to earn MCBB's first league win of the season.
Meredith travels across town tomorrow for a 4 p.m. battle with the William Peace Pacers. No ticket will be required to enter the Hermann Center.
The Angels required six minutes of play before scoring their first point of the game, allowing Salem to enjoy an early seven point lead. But 15 extra rebounds, including eight offensive boards from Perko, helped MCBB gain control of the game for the win.
Kimberly Schuh finally evened the score on a free throw with 1:36 remaining in the first period, and Zaina Hook made one to give the Angels the lead. Madison Gladwell drained a three-pointer, and MCBB ended the frame up by one.
An early three from Daia Dawkins kicked off a second stanza that left Meredith with a 10-point advantage heading into the half.
The Spirits landed a pair of three-pointers to open the third frame, but a poised Angels squad held steady. Mikayla Thompson completed an and-one, and a steal from Hook ended with another two points as MCBB pushed their advantage to 13. Another Hook steal finished with a layup from Perko continued to put pressure on the hosts, and Meredith refused to let up.
With their largest lead of 26 points early in the fourth, the Avenging Angels held Salem to just nine points in the final quarter to finish of with the victory.
Schuh notched 15 points with nine rebounds, four assists, and Gladwell finished with 10 points, four assists. Hook tallied a career-high seven steals with 10 assists and 11 points, and Dawkins added nine boards, eight points, and four assists. Thompson notched seven points with three rebounds.
Salem's Sydney Bowen finished with a team-high 18 points.
