  • Three Angels Earn Women's Basketball Honors

    Three Meredith College women's basketball Angels were selected for end-of-season honors as announced Thursday from the USA South Athletic Conference office. Kimberly Schuh and Kate Perko garnered All-Conference awards, and Madison Gladwell earned her second All-Sportsmanship selection.

    The East Division sixth-seed Meredith College Angels put together a strong 40 minutes versus the East's third-seed Averett Cougars but were unable to regain the lead down the stretch. AU will advance to the USA South Tournament quarterfinals with a 68-56 win over MCBB.

    Meredith College basketball standout Kate Perko collected her fifth USA South Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week honor as announced Monday from the conference office. Perko led the Avenging Angels with a game-high 28 points in both contests last week. And Saturday she set a new all-time Meredith record as the top freshman scorer in a single season with 449 total points.

    With a 5-11 USA South record the Meredith College women's basketball program advanced to their third consecutive conference tournament set to begin Wednesday night. The East Division sixth-seed Avenging Angels will travel to Danville, Virginia, to face off with the East's third-seed Averett Cougars.

    In alignment with all 18 USA South Women's Basketball programs, Meredith College will host a #BlockOutCancer event this season to support Greensboro Head Coach Randy Tuggle in his fight against pancreatic cancer. MCBB hosts East Division leader William Peace Tuesday, Feb. 4, and the night will focus on Tuggle.

    The Meredith College basketball team challenged the visiting Greensboro Pride throughout the 40 minutes in Saturday's USA South action but fell short in a 78-73 loss. Kate Perko and Kimberly Schuh combined for 41 points with Perko leading the game with 19 rebounds.

    As part of the USA South's Cans Across the Conference competition, the Meredith College Avenging Angels collected 1,150 non-perishable food items and donated to the Raleigh Rescue Mission. With 18 member institutions, the league presented 69,387 items to local organizations across the wide footprint of the conference.
