CLERMONT, Fla. -- Meredith College opened day two at The Spring Games with a 10-0 victory over the Hood Blazers. The Avenging Angels held off Bethany (W.V.) to finish with a 7-6 win.
Brie Caldwell earned her first collegiate win with a three-hit shutout. She walked two and struck out four, as she faced 24 Hood batters in a complete game pitched. Kiley Banks pitched the first five innings for Hood and earned the loss.
Anna Goldman was the only Angel to reach first through the next three innings, when Emily Velazquez reached first in the top of five on a hit to left field. Savannah Pierce walked and both runners advanced another bag. Goldman loaded the bases on a hit-by-pitch, and Mabe scored two on a single up the middle to give the Angels a three-run lead.
Meredith continued to strike in the sixth as Susanne Taylor led off with a walk, and Rachel Johnson advanced on a single. Both runners earned a second bag in time for Alyssa Drake to step in for a one-RBI single to left. Johnson scored unearned, and Pierce advanced on another hit-by-pitch. Goldman and Smith each notched an RBI-single to extend Meredtih's lead to seven.
Hood subbed in a new pitcher who walked Meredith's first four batters in the top of the seventh inning to give Pierce an RBI, and Fallon Wimberly scored another run, unearned. Sarah Moore drove in Alyssa Drake before Hood's Wilson closed out the frame.
vs. Bethany (W.V.)
Meredith jumped out to a five-run lead on five hits with one error in the third inning. Madison Hamilton, Tatum Smith, and Bryce Smith each recorded a an RBI-single, and Johnson scored two on a one-out double to left.
The Angels' defense held off Bethany through the next two frames, and Goldman crushed a home run to center field to spread the gap to six.
But the Bison responded in the sixth with help from back-to-back Angel missteps. Angela Brandel entered the batting order and notched a two-out, RBI-single to kickoff a six-run rally. Paige Allen walked in another run, and three more Bison advanced home during Lauren Maichle's at-bat. A two-out double to center field tied the game at six, leaving the Angels with a big assignment heading into the bottom of the frame.
Mabe and Hamilton walked but were both stranded, leaving the game even heading into the seventh inning.
With Myah Morse in the circle with a fresh arm, Meredith finished off batters four, five, and six to return to the plate for another chance.
Johnson singled, and Taylor advanced on a walk. Caldwell entered as a pinch hitter and drove in pinch runner Velazquez on a two-out double to left for the win.
Sarah Gundlach allowed eight hits with no earned runs and struck out four in the first 5.2 innings. Morse entered in relief to pitch to the last batter in the sixth and finished off the seventh for the win allowing no hits and no runs.
Bethany's Gabriella Capaldi earned her third loss on the season.
Meredith will enjoy a day off in Florida before returning to the field Thursday morning to face Olivet at 10 a.m. followed by the Coe College Hawks.
