Late Soccer Goal Secures 2-1 Win Over Guilford

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Meredith College kicked off the Annual Soccer Classic with a 2-1 victory over the visiting Guilford Quakers. Veteran Jessica Wallace set up the game winner for new transfer Ansley Bucknam late in the match to secure the win for the Angels.

Stockton University defeated N.C. Wesleyan 1-0 in Rocky Mount in the Classic's second match of the day. All four teams will convene in Raleigh Sunday for a double-header to close out the event starting with the Avenging Angels versus the SU Ospreys at Noon.

Game summary
Kirstie King punted three long attempts at the net early in the match, each one saved by Quaker keeper Morgan Malikowski. The Avenging Angels made it deep into scoring territory in the 25th minute, but Jessica Wallace's attempt flew just wide of the box.

Rookie Madison Thompson entered the match Bucknam in the 31st minute and scored four minutes later on a pass from Amelie Gillies to give the Angels a 1-0 advantage.

Kat Pike stopped the lone Guilford attempt late in the period to hold onto the lead heading into halftime.

The Quakers wasted no time after the break as as Karol Jaimes knotted the match at ones in the sixth minute of the period. Teammate Emily Shephard was credited with the assist.

Neither team would find the goal again until Bucknam and Wallace connected down the stretch for Meredith.

Pike recorded two saves in her second win on the season. Guilford's Aubrey Gunther entered for Malikowski at the break and earned the loss with two saves to her credit. Malikowski notched four in her 45 minutes in-goal for the Quakers.
