SEWANEE, Tenn. -- The Meredith College soccer Angels dropped the season opener 2-0 to the Berry Vikings in Friday night's neutral site contest. The Avenging Angels face off with the host Sewanee Tigers tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at Puett Field.

With two attempts at the net senior forward Jessica Wallace led the Meredith squad, which included seven freshmen and one new transfer in the starting lineup. Three of the rookies, Sarah Halsey, Morgan Tingen, and Lillian Fox, each recorded a shot at the net.

Kirstie King posted the Angels' first attempt but Viking goalie Izzy Van Buren interfered with the shot. Kat Pike held off an attack midway through the first period by Berry's Carson Gilliam to keep the game even.

Van Buren stopped Wallace at the 30-minute mark, but Fox forced a corner kick for the Avenging Angels seven minutes later. Berry blocked Tingen's look at the goal, and Halsey's header on a second Fox corner kick flew just wide to send both teams into the break scoreless.

Wallace and King opened the second half with back-to-back attempts held off by the Vikings leaving Berry's Vanessa Belanger with the first goal of the match at 65:41. Samantha Schoppy scored a second point for the Berry off a pass from Kaitlin Ramsey to secure a win over the Angels with less than six minutes remaining in regulation.

Pike recorded a pair of saves for the Avenging Angels in the loss with Van Buren and Alyssa Stevens splitting time for Berry with a combined three stops.
