RALEIGH, N.C. -- With 94 career caused turnovers Meredith College senior defender Cameron Ruffin tied the women's lacrosse all-time record in Tuesday night's 24-0 victory over the visiting Salem Spirits. Ruffin forced four turnovers on the night to reach Danielle Lee's, '15, record.
The Avenging Angels made quick work of the Spirits, who launched their varsity program this year. Carlee Joseph and Sarah Arbes opened the match with back-to-back goals as Olivia Higgs kneeled in the penalty box due to an administrative green card. Maria Codispoti dished out a pair of assists to Holly Hite and Julie Capretti on the next two draw controls, and Joseph found Hite in the crease for Meredith's fifth goal at 27:25.
Joseph scored her 52nd season goal on the next play with Lilia Cruz on the assist, and defender Natalie Purcell crossed the line to find Hite inside. The Angels continued to control the ball, and Purcell scored her first goal on the season with 11 minutes left in the half.
Ruffin controlled the next draw, and Higgs found Rachel Argabright for the team's 15th goal on the game to close out the half.
Meredith backed off the attack throughout the second period to finish with nine more points on the board and the win.
Hite led 14 Avenging Angel scorers with four goals, and Joseph, Higgs, and Argabright tallied three apiece. Codispoti dished out four assists, and Brooke Leithead and Cruz notched four points apiece. Leithead and Sarah Arbes caused three turnovers apiece, and Hite added 10 draw controls for a career tally of 284.
Salem goalie Hannah Ostlund recorded 11 stops for the Spirits.
The Avenging Angels will celebrate Senior Day Saturday, April 7, just prior to a 2 p.m. draw versus the visiting Ferrum Panthers. Katie Buckman, Carlee Joseph, and Cameron Ruffin will be recognized. Follow the live video/audio broadcast HERE.
