RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Meredith College lacrosse team collected over $2200 for the American Cancer Society as part of Saturday's "Shots for Scott" event. MC Lax shut out the visiting Brevard Tornados 22-0 with all 23 Angels seeing time on the field.
Today's event honored the memory of Scott Buckman, father of senior defender Katie Buckman and fan of Meredith lacrosse. Buckman passed away last December from prostate cancer, and today's event highlighted his profound, positive impact on the Meredith lacrosse community.
The Avenging Angels tallied 32 shots on the day with 4 from Brevard. Fans pledged any monetary amount per shot attempt for either team, or both teams. And all simple donations were also accepted. The team sold tee shirts to commemorate the day with proceeds part of the final donation to the ACS. Today's collection is part of the Meredith Student-Athlete Advisory Committee's commitment to the USA South's Pennies for a Purpose annual spring service initiative.
Holly Hite led today's offense with four shots, and Julie Capretti and Hanna Anderson tallied three apiece. Maria Codispoti dished out a career-high six assists with one goal. Carlee Joseph, Olivia Higgs, and rookie Brooke Leithead recorded a pair of goals apiece. Hite collected a game-high seven draw controls with four to Joseph and Jordyn King. Natalie Purcell caused two turnovers to lead the defense with four additional players recording one apiece.
The Avenging Angels hosts Averett Wednesday evening under the lights. First draw is slated for 6 p.m. on the Meredith turf.
