RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Meredith College lacrosse Angels returned to USA South action Wednesday evening to capture a 21-5 home victory over Methodist. Rookie Lilia Cruz led the match with nine points on five goals, four assists, and ranks third in the league with 15 career assists.
Holly Hite scored the first two goals of the match, but the Monarchs responded with a free position score from Emily Brennen. Cruz found Carlee Joseph in the 20th minute to return Meredith's advantage to two, but Methodist continued to battle.
MU pulled to within one on another Brennen score, but the Angels finally created a gap with five consecutive points for a 9-3 lead, including back-to-back notes from Olivia Higgs.
Monti Hendrix collected the next draw control, and Monarch teammate Madison Ronelli scored a quick goal. But Hite scooped up one of her match-high 11 draw controls and dished off to Cruz for a quick response. Julie Capretti closed out the half with a free position score to spread the gap to seven heading into the break.
The Angels controlled the second period netting 10-of-17 attempts to secure the win.
Hite scored four goals with three assists, and Joseph notched three goals with an assist. Higgs finished with three goals, and Hanna Anderson scored two with a solo assist to Cruz. Both Capretti and Maria Codispoti recorded two points apiece. Led by Sydney Hardee in goal with seven saves during the first half, Meredith gave the Monarchs trouble with 15 caused turnovers on the night.
MU's Molly O'Hara recorded the loss with 11 stops.
The Avenging Angels host conference rival Piedmont Saturday in a Noon contest. The Lions boast a 6-0 USA South record heading into the match with the Angels having won all four of their league matches.
