Hines' Season-High 20 Points Keeps Meredith Close in 66-53 Loss to Panthers

Chandler Hines

FERRUM, Va. -- Meredith College shooter Chandler Hines posted a season-high 20 points on six-of-nine from three-point range in Wednesday night's 66-53 loss to the USA South's Ferrum Panthers. Ferrum leads the East Division as the only undefeated team remaining in the conference.

Hines hit two quick threes early in the game to jumpstart Meredith's early success. Kimberly Schuh and Kirstie King pitched in, and the Angels held an 11-9 advantage with 2:54 remaining in the period. Hines drained her third three at 2:05, but Ferrum's Zarkia Mattox followed on the next play to steal the lead. Schuh scored two buckets late in the period to pull Meredith back in front to close out the quarter.

A 22-5 second period scoring drought for Meredith allowed the hosts to step back in front by 13 points heading into the half. After the intermission Hines helped pull the Angels back to within seven late in the third frame, and the Avenging Angels remained close until a 9-0 Panther run spread the gap to 16 with not enough time to recover.

Hines led the Angels with a season high seven rebounds to go along with her game high point total, and Schuh finished with 18 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Madison Gladwell led the Angels with five assists, adding two steals, and Brittany Preston notched five rebounds with a pair of steals.

Mattox led the Panthers with 17 points, eight boards, and Erin March tallied a game high 11 rebounds with 14 points in the win.

The Avenging Angels host N.C. Wesleyan Saturday at 2 p.m. in the first of two USA South pairings this weekend. During halftime of the game, Meredith Athletic Director Jackie Myers will recognize the following eight championship teams, as the College reveals a series of new banners in Weatherspoon Gymnasium.
